Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Demo Impression

March 4, 2013

I know it must seem strange for someone to preemptively try to judge a game entirely from just the demo, but to be honest if Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 remains just as good throughout as the small 10 minute demo that was released on the 20th February, it will be quite a game, let me tell you.

Right, before I start, unless you know the Naruto story or at least the basic premise this will probably go completely over your head so it’s likely not going to be worth your while to keep reading, but while you aren’t reading this go and catch up and watch some Naruto or play the first two Ultimate Ninja Storm games. Go do that then come back. I’ll wait

OK good! You’re back. Now I will continue.

The demo features the opening two sequences from Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. First you muster the ninja forces of the Hidden Leaf  Village as the third Hokage to fight the rampaging Nine-Tailed Box Demon, then you must fight a mysterious masked ninja as the Fourth Hokage in an attempt to save the village (bet you guys wish you’d read up now).

The Fourth Hokage totally kicking butt!

CyberConnect 2 has always done a wonderful job delivering and recreating the world of Naruto, and the feel of almost playing an ‘interactive anime’ with the heavily stylized cell-shaded graphics, fluid electric animation and pulse-pounding action makes it seem like the Naruto universe has jumped straight out of the manga or anime.

The Ultimate Ninja Storm games have such a brilliantly focused mind when recreating Naruto, and let me tell you they haven’t taken their foot off the gas because, for a 10 minute demo it is insanely addictive and full of endless re-playability. I’ve played it over 15 times now and I still enjoy it.

The atmosphere, the action, the visuals, the gameplay, it’s all outstanding. I think even people unfamiliar with the anime/manga would appreciate the quality that just drools off the screen when you play the demo. As a fan of the Naruto franchise the little sneak-peek has completely sold the game to me. I got shivers up my spine as I commanded the Ninja of the Hidden Leaf against the bombastic assault of the Nine-Tails while fighting as the Fourth Hokage and pulling off one of the series’ trademark Quick Time Events. Watching the stunning, over the top visuals unfold left me with a big silly grin plastered over my face.

The only little problem is that the localised english audio is still quite badly out of sync with the character’s facial animations.

If you like Naruto, get this game. You have no choice, get it! I swear you will not be disappointed, and to those who are unfamiliar (firstly you will need to catch up) don’t let it put you off. The game is simple, the mechanics accessible to newcomers and the reward is that you get to play a brilliant game.

Keep your eyes open as Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 launches on the 8th March 2013, and keep them peeled on WeHave9Minutes for my full review
