Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5 Promo

August 2, 2012

Yes, I’m not afraid to admit that I’m quite excited for the next season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The animated series has come a long way from the kid friendly first season. It has become a much darker and more questioning show. It’s not all about the action scenes and epic battles between the Republic and the Confederacy. The series has grown darker, asking what it means to be a Jedi: Can they be peacemakers when they fight as the Generals in the Army of the Republic to protect the galaxy from the tyrannical Confederacy.? Can Anakin safeguard his wife, apprentice and friends from the war and still stand by his Jedi teachings?

And what does it mean to be a Clone? Are you truly individual or are you really expendable?

The Clone Wars is beyond the factions of the two warring armies, but it also looks into how war creates opportunity for others to cease power.

One of the most rememberable storylines in Season 4 was when Captain Rex and his Clone brothers were pushed to question their orders as their Jedi General disregarded his Clone’s safety, using risky heavy causality strategies, eventually pitting two forces of Clones against each other with false intel. Once Captain Rex realises the General’s betrayal, he and his Clones decide to mutiny and take their Jedi General into custody. However, the General won’t go quietly and the Clones have to pursue the General into the forest where the Clones struggle to capture the General who reveals himself a servant of the Dark Lord Count Dooku. Having successfully undermined the Clones efforts in the theatre of war, the Captain struggles with a decision to either turn the General over to the Republic or take justice into his own hands. It’s surprisingly gripping for a ‘kids’ show’.

Still, you may think George Lucas sold out, but more and more the series embodies ideas and themes that are so strong in the films that The Clone Wars feels like an extension of the films rather than an addon.

And Season 5 looks like a big one. The Deathwatch, the terrorist group from Mandalore, are back and it looks like their story will come to a head, as well as the continuing menace of Darth Maul and his brother Savage Opress (yes, ok, I’m still not happy about Darth Maul being alive, but it looks like it’ll give us another great stand off between him and Obi Wan).

The jump in quality from Season 1 to Season 5 is obvious, and it’s stunning how far the series has come and how good it looks. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat watching the Season 5 promo trailer and my eyes widened along with Obi Wan’s when he looked upon the war-savaged Mandalore in the SDCC promo scene.

If you haven’t seen the series yet, I suggest giving it a go! Perhaps just skip Season 1 if you don’t want a lot of Jar-Jar episodes.
