Video Game Gadgets I Want To Own

July 29, 2012

Groovitron (Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, A Crack In Time)

I knew for this list I would have to pick a gadget from the Ratchet and Clank series, known not only for its wacky weapons but its very desirable gadgets. I have chosen the Groovitron after many moments of umming and ahhhing between the Groovitron, the Swingshot or the Magnetboots/Gravity Boots. However I believe the Groovitron has much more real life applicability. Just imagine you come out from a wonderful night in a club only to be accosted by some ruffians outside. You could just whip out your Groovitron and make them break out in a fit of uncontrollable boogieing giving you plenty of time to run away or time to grab your wrench (or whatever improvised weaponry you have in your pockets) and clobber them.

Although technically a weapon in A Crack in Time and a utility in Tools of Destruction, I’m calling it a gadget because in the real world I would imagine Apple Inc patenting the Groovitron which makes it a gadget much like the iPad or iPhone … in my mind …

Gravity Gun (Half Life 2, Half Life 2 Episode 1 and 2)

Well obviously this was going to make it on the list, who wouldn’t want to wow your friends and family by pulling out the gravity gun and shifting bits of furniture around without even breaking a sweat. Also it would be very handy for grabbing cash registers and safes from a distance. Not that I condone robbery! Never! Perhaps relentlessly tormenting your little cousin by flinging cardboard boxes at them.

Portal Gun (Portal 1, Portal 2)

This is perhaps the best gadget on the list. It’s real world applicability is obvious beyond words. Perhaps this little song can highlight the endless possibilities of the Portal Gun:

Although, a word of warning, unlike Chell you do now have really strong ‘fall-boots’ which will transfer the severe amounts of kinetic energy away from your brittle bones, so play with physics and conservation of speed through portals at your own risk!

Cloaking Augment (Deus Ex Human Revolution)

Just imagine being gifted with the Cloaking Augment that made Adam Jensen the deadly corporation espionage agent. You could instead use it to vanish in front of people you don’t want to talk to, appear in your seat late in a lecture, sneak into cinemas and theatres, surprise your friends and appear suddenly in front of your foes, giving them a roundhouse kick to their head and then vanish cackling maniacally. Just be used to have plenty of boost bars and red bulls to keep your energy up. You wouldn’t want to be caught with your trousers down, about to play a hilarious prank with a hotdog …
