E3: Day One News

June 6, 2012

First of all, I know I’m missing out the Halo 4 demo and many more, but these are the seven that interest me the most, so I’ll write about them.

The Last of Us Gameplay Trailer

Our first look at gameplay comes from The Last of Us by Naughty Dog.

Firstly, The Last of Us looks brutal and as pulse racing as we hoped it would be, a tale of struggle to live out each day. The player controls Noel as he explores the crumbling remains of civilisation with Ellie. Ellie is not just an NPC you escort, but a character that reacts to Noel’s questionable fighting style and does not need you to carry her or help her down from ledges.

The gameplay seems to hint at a larger crafting system for making improvised weapons. Bullets seem limited and enemies react to your changing position and status. When Noel runs out of bullets and hears the click, the enemy hears it as well and will just come straight for you. I don’t need to tell you that what Naughty Dog has on their hands is anything but the ordinary ‘zombie’ game.

BEYOND: Two Souls Reveal

I was right. Or, rather, other people were right. The makers of Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream, did have something to reveal. Here it is.

From the first minute there is intrigue and emotion, the two most important things in any Quantic Dream’s production. One very big hook: a heavy hint at the supernatural and even government conspiracy, perhaps. Who is this woman, where did she get these supernatural talents and who is this lightning she talks to? I’m already hooked on this game. The improved graphics, the realism and the damn potential of this game has got me ready for more, more, more. And yes, Ellen Paige is the voice of the mysterious fugitive.

Resident Evil 6 Gameplay Trailer

The gameplay shows how Capcom is now using Resident Evil as an action title, much less a horror title, but there are flashes of brilliance inside the actiony shell.

Okay, the bit on the highway was just plain silly, but the narrow corridors and moody lightning hint at a return to the type of claustrophobic horror Resident Evil titles are known for. A lot of work has been put into the look of the game. It is dark and oppressive, something previous Resident Evil titles used to embody, so it’s great to see those themes make a return. It looks like there is a new cover system, but then again, that’s not a bad thing. Zombies just walk blindly at you, so having cover isn’t the best advantage. I think it could work. In the trailer there was a lot of brawling with the zombies and reactive environment finishers, slamming a zombies head against a burning bus, taking a zombie’s axe off them and beheading them with it.

And yes, everyone’s favourite President’s daughter is back: Elena. Hope you don’t have to escort her through every freaking thing. The trailer ends with a nice cliffhanger (or rather helicopter-hanger). Leon and Elena trapped by an overwhelming horde of zombies.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Gameplay Trailer

Easily one of the best gameplay trailers so far.

The work and attention to every single detail makes this Assassin’s Creed seem like some weird dream UbiSoft has cooked up. It goes above and beyond the other instalments of Assassin’s Creed . You’d think they were pulling our leg and this is nothing but an elaborate hoax, but really. You lucky people will be able to play this soon. I’m incredibly excited for this now. I could go on and on in detail about everything about this trailer, but let’s keep this short, just watch for yourself.

God Of War: Ascension

Okay, I may not like the fact that God of War‘s next outing is yet another prequel, but you can’t deny its look: incredibly visceral and good old hack ‘n’ slasher fun. A few new things we can take away from this clip; Kratos can now grab enemies with the Blades of Chaos and whip them around to use as weapons against their fellows and it appears that Kratos can pick up certain enemy weapons as well for a deeper combat system.

Kratos seems to be fighting yet another carnival of monsters, from goat-men to elephant men, and once again Kratos hydrophobia is well founded, as yet another monstrous fishy demon seems to be calling for his blood.

South Park : The Stick Of Truth

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have teamed up with Obsidian to create a South Park game where you create a character and join our favourite foul-mouthed foursome on an epic adventure to save their beloved town.

Warning for the faint hearted, this trailer contains the same lude humour as any South Park episode. It’s EPIC, in other words.

PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale

Ok, for our last trailer is P.A.S.B.R (not the best acronym ever). A new reveal trailer has brought two new characters into the fold. Drum roll please …

Big Daddy from Bioshock …

and …

and …

Bagsy Nathan!

Just check it out.

Keep updated for more reveals from P.A.S.B.R and E3 here at Huttstuff.
