The Elder Scrolls Online Third Faction

May 19, 2012

Let’s give it up for the third and final faction of The Elder Scrolls Online: The Ebonheart Pact consisting of the Dunmer, the Nords and the Argonians. This faction has banded together out of desperation rather than friendship or common goals to protect themselves against enemy forces.

Creative Director Paul Sage of Zenimax Online Studios says: “About 50 years prior to the game, an Akaviri invasion came in and basically tried to take over. What happens now is that the Dunmer and the Nords have formed an alliance because the attack was so bad that they realized they were weak to the Imperial rise. So they form an alliance of convenience with the Argonians. They’re surrounded by all these tides of opposing forces. They feel really threatened, so the Ebonheart’s entire purpose is to band together and make sure they’re no longer in danger.”

Here is an overview of the three races:

The Dunmer, or Dark Elves, are a dark-skinned, red-eyed people from the area of Morrowind. They are gifted with above-average strength, agility and intellect, making them both capable warriors, archers and sorcerers specialising in destructive magic. Often seen as ruthless and proud, they do not easily trust other races.

The Nords are the tall and fair-haired people of Skyrim. Stout and resistant they make strong warriors and experienced seamen, prospering greatly from their nautical trade. Living in the often harsh climate of Skyrim, the Nords have developed a high resistance to cold both natural and magical.

The Argonians, called Saxhleel in their native tongue of Jel, is a reptilian race from the Black March, also known as Argonia. Being subject to slavery of the Dunmer, the Argonians have years of experienced guerilla warfare under the belt from defending their borders. They are naturally resistant to a number of diseases and poisons and often make both excellent thieves and skilled magicians.

The fact that these people have banded together out of a desperate wish for protection, and the Argonians being former slaves of the Dunmer, makes this faction look more than interesting. Lacking both friendship and common ambitions, it sounds like it’s only a matter of time before internal friction is going to tear these three races apart. Except that they have to stay together to stay alive. Playing in this faction is going to require some diplomatic skills.

Some might have noticed that the Imperials are not up for play in any of the three factions of The Elder Scrolls Online. This might disappoint some, especially those who sided with the Imperials in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. But in The Elder Scrolls Online the Imperials are going to stand on the other side of the border of the three factions who are going to fight against them. But if the factions are also going to fight against each other, and perhaps even internally in their own faction … Well, all we can do at the moment is to wait for next week where both a bit of lore and a peek of the quest system is in store.

Until then, read more about the races and areas of the third faction here.
